Group exhibition "Artбаза"
Astangu ammunition depot, Astangu, Estonia 2017
Curators: Jaan Toomik, Vladimir Dubossarsky
During the first-year Master's course of the Contemporary Art specialty of the Estonian Academy of Arts, we had a rare opportunity to make an one day exhibition event in the historical ammunition depots of Astangu.
Astangu tunnel warehouses are ammunition warehouses of the Baltic Sea Fleet of the Russian Empire in 1918, which were later continued to be developed during the Soviet Union. Today they are abandoned and some have partially collapsed, but are mostly considered as a building monument as an important part of Peter the Great's sea fortress and a remarkable structure in the construction history of Estonia.
What significance does a former ammunition depot have for a city with its persistent but dysfunctional existence? What shapes does it bear, what connections does it create? How can an artist take advantage of extreme conditions, making them work to his advantage? Tunnel as warehouse, tunnel as mystery, tunnel as refuge, path or danger. A tunnel as a beginning, middle and end. The group exhibition works created for the exhibition were site-specific in different key and form.
